Influenza vaccines

Due to the growing number of questions about influenza vaccination, we are posting this update:

  • On 24 September 2020 a portion of the flu vaccines arrived at the practice.
  • Given the challenging epidemiological situation this year, it was clear to us that the interest in getting a flu vaccine will be more significant than in the previous years. Given that only a very small percentage of patients are vaccinated each year (around 5% nationwide and even less in our practice), we decided to survey the preliminary interest in getting a flu vaccine using a mass email to determine how many vaccines would need to be ordered.
  • Based on the survey in June, we ordered five times more vaccines than normally, including a reserve for chronically ill patients as well as for patients who get vaccinated regularly.
  • After repeated phone calls during August and September, we were finally told by the supplier that we are getting less than half of the ordered amount as the total supply had to be redistributed to cover each customer order at least partially.
  • We have been contacting other suppliers and the message is clear – there is an overall shortage in the entire country.
  • We too, therefore, must decide on whom to invite for vaccination, while not everyone can be satisfied.
  • We give priority to patients who get vaccinated annually and have a health and age-related indication (heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, diabetes - all must be on therapy; or after spleen removal), and offer the rest of the amount to patients who subscribed to the survey in the summer in chronological order.
  • We can all try to express our interest in getting a flu vaccine next year in order to increase ifluenza vaccination coverage in our population, so that the state and vaccine manufacturers get a clear message that they can count with us for the future and provide more vaccines. This would be a positive step towards improving the health of the entire population in the future.
  • We call upon those, who will not get the vaccine to wear a face mask consistently, disinfect their hands and avoid large gatherings to help reduce the spread of not only the influenza and coronavirus, but also of other respiratory infections during the autumn and winter season.
  • Please be considerate to our staff!

How to proceed in case of quarantine or isolation due to COVID-19

Quarantine follows contact with a COVID-19 positive person or after return from high risk areas (with or without symptoms of the disease)

Isolation follows a positive test for COVID-19, you may or may not have symptoms of the disease

Quarantine

  • If you are in close contact with a person who has been shown to be COVID-19 positive, you must be quarantined for 10 days.
  • On the 4th or 5th day after contact, you have the first test (nasopharyngeal swab and PCR test) and in case the test is negative then the second one happens on the 10th day of quarantine. If this test is also negative, your quarantine will be terminated.
  • You can request a test recommendation from us by e-mail. We send your recommendation to the central register and you do not receive anything by e-mail, text message or on paper, you can go straight to a testing point and according to your Czech health insurance number (you will need your health insurance card and identity card or passport) they will find you in the register.
  • If you know you have been in contact with a COVID-19 positive person and the Hygiene Service has not contacted you yet, please contact us by e-mail.
  • Unfortunately, we receive the test results with a large delay, so please communicate them to us (preferably by e-mail); to issue a second recommendation to end the quarantine, we must know the first result.

Isolation

  • If the test is positive, with or without symptoms, you must undergo 10 days of isolation.
  • At the end, there is no second test, but in order for your isolation to be terminated you must have no symptoms for the last 3 days of isolation (loss of taste and smell may persist for weeks after infection; these do not count as persistent symptoms).

WE WILL NOT FULLY PREVENT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. FORTUNATELY MOST PEOPLE HAVE ONLY MILD SYMPTOMS.

THE MEASURES IN PLACE ARE TO ENSURE THAT THE EPIDEMIC DOES NOT GET OUT OF CONTROL.

IF THAT HAPPENS THEN MORTALITY WILL BE HIGH, ABOUT 1% DUE TO THE INFECTION ONLY WITH ADDITIONAL MORTALITY CAUSED BY OVERLOADING OF THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM.

IF WE CAN FLATTEN THE CURVE, WE HAVE THE TOOLS TO LIMIT THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE.
