Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)
The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), also known as a glycemic curve, is an auxiliary method used to examine patients suspected of having diabetes mellitus.
How is OGTT Performed?
1. Fasting Blood Sample: Blood is drawn after fasting for ideally 10-12 hours, usually in the morning.
2. Glucose Load: The patient drinks a beverage containing 75g of sugar within 5-10 minutes.
3. Rest Period: After consuming the beverage, the patient must remain at rest. Eating and drinking are not allowed throughout the examination.
4. Follow-Up Blood Samples: Blood samples are taken at 1 hour and 2 hours after consuming the glucose beverage.
Please note that if the fasting blood glucose level is higher than 6.9 mmol/l, the OGTT test will not be performed.
